Factors predicting transfer of care home residents to the Emergency Department

An observational cohort study

Older people living in care homes are transferred to the hospital more frequently than other groups, which can cause harm and functional decline. Research suggests many care homes hospital transfers are unnecessary and that some care home transfer higher number of residents than others.

This project aims to identify factors which affect whether residents are transferred to the Emergency Department, using anonymised linked electronic health care data collected for the City of Bradford. Variation in how often residents are transferred to the Emergency Department between different care homes will be estimated.

Understanding the reasons that some care home transfer more residents than others will help identify where resident care could be improved.
