Emergency department presentations in palliative care patients

A retrospective cohort study

A partnership between the Sheffield St Luke’s Hospice and our Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) theme brought together the clinical specialities of palliative care and urgent and emergency care to understand how patients at the end of their life accessed and used UEC services.

The project created and analysed a linked routine dataset comprising community palliative care contacts and emergency department and hospital admissions. Analysis identified and followed patients known to palliative care who accessed the emergency department.  The study led to recommendations to consider the UEC care needs of this patient group.
