Exploring how citizen science can be used to improve health

Share:

Physical activity levels of many of the children in Bradford do not meet national guidelines which can have a negative effect on health. JU:MP (Join Us: Move, Play) is a program aimed at getting children and their families in Bradford active. JU:MP uses citizen science, an approach where the public get involved in carrying out the research, within the programme.

This project is investigating things that help and prevent children and families being physically active, using citizen science, as part of the wider JU:MP evaluation. Initial findings have led to a physical activity app called best life, designed for children, having different elements added according to the children’s feedback. These elements have included avatars have different clothing options including hijabs and longer skirts, and the addition of pets and sporting equipment have been added to the store. These can be “bought” within the app with points gained through being physically active.
