Promoting Smoking CEssation and PrevenTing RElapse in people with mental illness after a smokefree mental health inpatient stay

Share:

The NIHR-funded SCEPTRE programme focuses on developing and testing a complex intervention to help smokers maintain or achieve positive smoking behaviour change (smoking cessation or smoking reduction) following discharge from a ‘smokefree’ mental health inpatient stay.

A theory- and evidence-based new model, taking into account biopsychosocial perspectives and associated training and intervention manuals, were co-developed with service users, carers and clinicians and implemented on three acute adult mental health inpatient wards for a first round of testing for ‘usability’. Based on feedback from this early pilot stage, a decision was made to integrate the use of an evidence-based smoking cessation App into the intervention, and additional work was undertaken to develop adequate content and processes to ensure adequate user support and safety in our population. The SCEPTRE intervention is now being tested for feasibility/acceptability in a randomised controlled feasibility study. A definitive RCT with economic evaluation is planned thereafter.
