Last week, 25 members of the public from across the region collaborated to develop recommendations that will directly inform secure data environment decision-makers.
The Citizens’ Jury began with online sessions featuring Director Phil Waywell explaining the importance of public input, followed by expert presentations from Dr Kieran Baker on patient records in research and Professor Vishal Sharma, NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Yorkshire and Humber Implementation Theme co-lead, presenting on the Yorkshire & Humber Secure Data Environment.
The jury then convened in Thirsk for in-person deliberations. Peter Singleton from Cambridge Health Informatics Limited presented on data protection laws, while John Birkinshaw, Data Lead, discussed security measures within the environment.
Emma Lagerstedt from Understanding Patient Data challenged participants to consider potential concerns, leading to productive group discussions about benefits and risks. The PANORAMA project – a Northern SDEs Partnership – was introduced by Phil Waywell and Kate O’Sullivan, highlighting strategic benefits for the region.
On the final day, Professor Sharma explained how researchers work within the NHS and addressed participants’ questions.
The Yorkshire & Humber SDE extends thanks to all experts, jurors and team members who contributed to this successful public engagement initiative.
