We are pleased to invite you to ‘An ounce of prevention‘. How can the NHS make a transition towards prevention in mental health?conference taking place on Thursday 12th March 2026 at The Milner Hotel (formerly The Principal), Station Road, York Y024 1AA. Registration from 09.30am, conference from 10.30-15.30.

It is now a priority that the NHS makes an historic shift from treatment to prevention. But can we do this in mental health services? The causes of mental ill health are often complex and are ‘upstream’. People who use mental health services also experience significant physical health problems and preventative strategies might require greater levels of integration with physical health services and primary care. Prevention also requires us to think about mental health from a public health and systems perspective.

Prevention is very much front and centre of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Yorkshire and Humber. The team is at the centre of international collaborations such as the Global Consortium for the Prevention of Depression who have generated clinical trials and economic studies to show what works and what is cost-effective.

In this one day conference you will hear from leading experts and research leaders to help us engage with the prevention agenda in mental health. The conference will consider prevention across the life course (Children and Young People, Working Age Adults and Older Adults) and will focus on what works and what is cost-effective. The setting is in the heart of the historic City of York and is an in-person event. It will be suitable for practitioners, policy makers and those charged with ensuring the NHS makes this historic shift to prevention.

Due to the short notice of the event we are not accepting abstracts however if you would like to tell us about your research or are interested in submitting a poster please email jo.orchard@york.ac.uk
