Co-production and PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) have quickly become the gold standard in mental health research and rightfully so. Coproduction allows those with lived experience to utilise their experiences, giving them a platform to have their voice heard. In turn research reflects their expertise as close to real as possible. Similarly, PPI allows for this in a much more commentary manner.
The COMIC (Child Oriented Mental Health Innovation Collaborative) team, situated in Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT), is dedicated to researching interventions that will better the lives of young people suffering with a mental health illness by working with them as opposed to on them. This is achieved through the COMIC Young Person’s Advisory Network (YPAN), a collection of community groups, charities, schools, universities, inpatient units and individuals who wish to utilise lived experience to impact change in mental health research. The YPAN currently boasts over 140 young people from all over Yorkshire who the COMIC team regularly meet to discuss our studies through PPI.
Having a dedicated network for CYP to use their lived experience to direct research is only one of the ways the COMIC team use co-production and PPI in their research and in this session, we will discuss what constitutes good practice in terms of co-production and PPI as well as how to avoid tokenistic methods, with examples of current and past research as have collaborated with young people on.
There will be time throughout and at the end of the session for you to ask questions about co-production, PPI and the YPAN and we will answer them to best of our knowledge!
