NHS 111 and Acute hospital visits in Children and young people

Share:

Our Urgent and Emergency Care work showed that large numbers of patients using NHS 111 still attended the emergency department within 48 hours, despite recommendations to self-care or use community services.

As a result, South Yorkshire Integrated Care System piloted a new NHS 111 response for children and young people, where some calls were assessed by paediatric clinical advisors, rather than advisors with no paediatric speciality.
Using a database of healthcare records for children and young people, containing data on all NHS 111 calls and any subsequent hospital admission in Yorkshire and Humber we found that:
· Patients are more likely to comply with a paediatric clinical advisors advice not to attend the hospital
· Paediatric advisors are more willing to advise self-care and are better at accurately identifying serious cases
This evidence is being used by South Yorkshire ICS to support further roll out of the Clinical Advisory Service.
