Urgent Care Theme researcher Madina Hasan delivered a pivotal presentation at the OHDSI UK 2025 Conference on September 26, 2025. Her work directly supports the goals of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Yorkshire and Humber (YHARC) Urgent Care Theme, which focuses on transforming urgent and emergency care. Madina gave an impactful talk and shared a poster, focusing on a project that cuts right to the heart of a major NHS problem.
Madina’s presentation, titled “Standardising national-NHS APC Data with OMOP CDM: A Pilot for Secure Federated Research,” might sound technical, but the goal is simple: helping doctors and researchers understand why some people frequently end up in the hospital.
The presentation focused on the experience successfully adopting the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) to transform the national NHS England Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Admitted Patient Care (APC) dataset, demonstrating the feasibility and value of using OMOP-standardised APC data through a practical use case: characterising persistent frequent users of acute admission services within the South Yorkshire region. The analysis specifically aimed to identify key determinants of persistent frequent use.
A massive congratulations to Madina for putting the YHARC Urgent Care theme and the University of Sheffield at the forefront of this crucial national data work!
